Cancun Airport Overview

One of Mexico’s Busiest Airports

Cancun International Airport, one of Mexico’s busiest airports, is projected to handle over 32 million passengers by 2024. This airport is a major hub for both passenger and freight airlines, ranking among the most important in the world.

Cancun Airport Terminal 2

History of Cancun Airport
Originally, established in 1942 with a basic runway to transport forest goods, the airport was initially located where Kabah Avenue now stands in central Cancun. At that time, the first control tower was a simple wooden structure with a thatched roof. Subsequently, in 1970, the Mexican government developed a master plan for the Cancun project, which in turn ultimately led to the construction of the airport at its current location.
By May 1975, the first commercial flight took off, and the airport has been operating for 49 years, although it has faced occasional disruptions due to natural events like tropical storms and hurricanes. Today, the airport is identified by IATA: CUN, ICAO: MMUN, and you can refer to the airport Map for more details.
