Uber at Cancun Airport: Current Status & What Travelers Need to Know
Contrary to what you may have read on various news blogs and websites about transportation services available at the Cancun airport from digital platforms such as Uber or Didi, which state that they can now pick you up at the airport. It is currently not possible to hire a transportation service from any of the airport terminals using those apps.
Current Status of Ride-Sharing Services at Cancun International Airport
While Uber has won several legal challenges in Quintana Roo, their airport access remains blocked in court. Because the injunctions obtained are preliminary, it is not feasible to hire these services at Cancun International Airport.
Legally, only vehicles with federal permits and airport concessions can operate at Cancun Airport, a federal zone. Furthermore, taxi apps do not have federal plates. Consequently, taxi unions leverage this argument to block unauthorized taxi services from operating at the airport.
Safety Concerns
Recently, the Cancun transporters’ organization barricaded airport exits, preventing digital apps from providing passenger transportation from the airport. There have been incidents between taxi drivers and Taxi Apps operators with customers on board, resulting in a violent scandal; the vehicle is blocked by taxi units, and the presence of police is required to restore order.
Taxi apps work throughout Cancun and the hotel zone, but only for airport drop-offs. Drivers can drop you at the airport, but picking up passengers risks everyone’s safety. Taxi union members actively block vehicles they suspect of unauthorized pickups, creating dangerous confrontations that can leave passengers stranded and threatened.
