Expansion Planned for Terminal 4 at Cancun International Airport
Cancun International Airport, managed by ASUR, has received authorization to expand with Terminal 4
ASUR received approval from Mexico’s Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) after submitting thorough environmental impact studies.
Expansion Facts
ASUR began the approval procedure at the end of 2023 and successfully completed it by October 25, 2024. Consequently, they are now set to begin a 63-hectare expansion with a planned expenditure exceeding $400 million USD. This five-year project will extend the airport’s infrastructure to satisfy rising demand in Cancun, a popular international destination. In 2023, Cancun Airport exceeded its yearly capacity, carrying over 32.3 million people throughout its terminals.
The project also includes an additional control tower on the west side of the airport. Furthermore, once completed, the expansion will be able to support operations for up to 50 years.
This expansion is, indeed, excellent news for the tourism industry in the Mexican Caribbean. Not only does Cancun Airport continue to lead as Mexico’s top tourism hub, but it is now further supported by the addition of the new Tulum International Airport and the Chetumal Airport as well.
Cancun International Airport currently boasts four terminals for domestic and international flights, along with two runways, providing amenities comparable to those of the world’s top airports. The upcoming expansion will attract more airlines, opening new routes and enhancing services to accommodate increased passenger flow to the Riviera Maya and Caribbean region.
We look forward to sharing updates on the development of this project. We hope we can announce its completion within the next five years.
